One of the most charming actor of all time, Shashi Kapoor, born as Balbir Raj Prithvi Raj Kapoor on March 18, 1938, is celebrating his 77th birthday today. The youngest son of actor Prithvi Raj Kapoor and younger brother of Late Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor was one of the first Indian actors to achieve success in Bollywood cinema and parallel cinema in his over five decade career. He grew up travelling around the country with his father’s acting group, Prithvi and began appearing on stage at the age of four.
He played the younger version of the characters played by his older brother Raj Kapoor in Aag (1948) and Awaara(1951). He met his wife Jennifer Kendal in 1956 in Calcutta where he was working as an actor and assistant stage manager for Prithvi. Shashi married Jennifer in July 1958 but she died of cancer in 1984. They had 3 children – Karan, Kunal and Sanjana.
Shashi made his debut as a leading man in Bollywood with Yash Chopra’s Dharamputra (1961). His movie Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965) became a blockbuster hit. The actor has appeared in 160 movies – 12 in English and 148 in Hindi. Of the 148 Hindi movies, he was the solo lead hero in 61 films, lead hero in 51 released multi star cast,2 unreleased multi star film, in a supporting role in 21 Hindi films, 4 films as a child artist and made 7 guest appearances.
Shashi Kapoor is known for his performance in hit movies like Sharmeelee, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Kala Pathar, Aa Gale Lag Ja, Trishul, Suhaag, Junoon, Kabhi Kabhi, Haseena Maan Jayegi, Shaan and many more. The veteran actor won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
